La Vie En Rose

Marion Cotillard stars in this biopic of chanteuse Edith Piaf - a
legend in her native France where her life-story has entered
national folklore.
As a child she was abandoned by her alcoholic mother, dumped by her
circus-performer father into a brothel run by her grandmother,
blinded by disease for
four years and cured after a trip to the shrine of St Therese De Lisieux.
At 15 she ran away to Paris where, in 1935, she was discovered begging
on a street corner with best friend Momone by cabaret impresario Louis
Leplee (Depardieu) who gave her a job singing in his club and nicknamed
her 'La Mome Piaf' (the Little Sparrow).
Brick Lane
Adapted from Monica Ali’s award-winning, best-selling novel, Brick
Lane is the story of a beautiful young Bangladeshi woman who arrives
in 1980’s London, leaving behind her beloved sister and home, for
an arranged marriage and a new life. Struggling to accept her lot, Nazeen
is soon forced to confront life the day that the hotheaded young Karim
comes knocking on her door. A truly contemporary story of love, cultural
difference and ultimately the strength of the human spirit.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The film tells the remarkable tale of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu
Amalric), the world-renowned editor of French ELLE magazine,
who suffered a stroke
and was paralyzed by the inexplicable "locked in" syndrome
at the age of 43. Director Julian Schnabel found illuminating ways of
portraying the protagonist's "locked-in syndrome," exploring
with poetic visuals the personal triumphs of this man limited by his
hospital bed.
The Counterfeiters

Once

A Dublin busker falls for the naive charms of a Czech immigrant in
this lyrical love story. Writer and director John Carney says he
wanted to make a "visual album" with Once, and the result is an
innovative piece of musical cinema. Casting musicians rather than
actors in the main roles and telling the story for the most part with songs
rather than dialogue, he ties film and music together to make something
that looks and sounds nothing like a conventional musical.
