The 'German Requiem' was completed by Brahms over a number of years and
presented in 1868, his first major work for choir and orchestra - a work
closely associated with the memory of his friend Schumann and in keeping
with Lutheran theology. It differs from the usual Latin Requiem in proclaiming
the hope of resurrection and reunion after death.
The 'Unfinished Symphony' by Schubert composed in 1822, six years before
his death aged 31, consists of only two movements but has become one of
the most popular works of the symphonic repertoire.
